1850: Jamaica

John Bigelow arrived in Kingston, Jamaica on January 8th, 1850. During his three week visit, Bigelow observed the social and economic conditions of the island. As the junior editor of the New York Evening Post, he reported his impressions in a series of letters addressed to the Post. Bigelow would go on to publish this work as Jamaica in 1850: or, The Effect of Sixteen Years Freedom on a Slave Colony. Also included is Bigelow’s “Notes on Jamaica 1850," a draft of his impressions.
