Yesterday at the Dover with Mrs Isham

Countess Bismark who was on her
lover’s arm - in mourning for her
father (grand) She has a genuine &
pleasing manner - free from all
pretention [sic]. With my husband in a
carriage yesterday afternoon &
made a half dozen calls - Mr
B brought young Lou Allen of St
Louis home with him to dinner
Carroll was here as usual and
to tea came Gilden a nephew of
old Mr Sam - and the ever faithful
but unappreciated Tuckerman
At 8 we walked to the Meullers whom
finding out we spent an hour at
Meulas - written Haer Reid cousin
Mary Thomas & Mr Armory a
business note to Mrs von Bunsen
The Goodnoughs & [illegible]
called yesterday while we were
out - Tuesday Dec 19th
As muddy & as mild - Drove to the
Monbijou Palace to see the ex
hibition of English China
which I enjoyed very much
Then some shopping & a long
walk above home - met

After church yesterday called on

with the Countess Schulenberg
to receive us at one today - Mr B
had called Saturday evening -
we were out - he came yesterday
while we were at dinner - Mr B
had gone with John to see Poultney
at Potsdam. I saw Mr Bancroft
houses who gave me his
orders as careful as once
did Mrs Dallas - We had Mrs
Isham & her sister at tea - they brought us a bottle of pickled
oysters for which however I have
very much lost my taste - George
Ashbridge, his cousin Mr
Townsend Tuckerman & Carroll

Mrs Fisk came over in Bancroft’s
carriage & in a horrid passion
exclaimed she did not know
we would be four in the carriage,
it was too bad to be so crowded -
& such a tirade you ever
heard - I bore it so good naturedly
and put her down so plainly &
completely - that she was forced
into feeling & confessing how
ashamed she felt of herself -
victory makes one always
generous & I forgave her

who was dull & gracious as

her presentation - a present - and I also ordered

Yesterday Mrs Isham & her
sister came up at six to help
us dress and at seven we
drove to Bancrofts & followed
on behind his & Fisk’s carriage
to the old Schloss - upon entering
we gave up our covers &
mounted two flights of stairs
wide & low to the [illegible]
door where the Diplomats
were to assemble - The wives
of the Station and Belgian
Ministers were not there -
but the Minister of St
Salvador at London was very
polite and asked the wife
of the Spanish Minister to
present me to the Marquise
[loss] and I myself
asked Mrs Hammer to present
me to the Countess Carolyn
the wife of the new Austrian Minister - I wore my
white satin petticoat &
white lace shawl for a time -
light green satin train &
waist - the latter trimmed
with point applique -
Diamond star in my hair
& necklace & earrings to
match - my dear aunt
Eliza’s silk stockings &
satin slippers from among
my old Paris finery -
Mrs Edgerton’s splendid
Lace mouchoir - & so my
toilette ended - Grace
had a lovely Tarleton with
white silk waist & train -
on the waist my finest
point lace - The field
flowers & daiseys [sic] on the
bodice & shirt - fan
to match - her head
looked lovely with a tiny
bouquet that belonged
to the parure There was the usual busy excite-
ment about the gentlemen
with big canes who directed
where every body [sic] was to go and
stay until finally we were
formed into a line - quaker
fashion, men and women
divided, and the Imperial
presence entered - the Sun

holding her train aloft &
the Countess Schenkenberg
presiding at the side of it -
Her Majesty spoke in turn
to [illegible] on every one of the
ladies and looked at me
well before she took charge
of the Fisk produce -
Then when the countess

she had known some of my
relations in Holland - was
very glad to see me, and hoped

Foggy - Saturday called at
the London deBunsen’s - then
drove to the Victoria Theatre
to see the “Wunderhorn” in
honor of the young Prince’s
birth day, who was ill & un
able to be present - The first
rank was occupied by
invited guests of the Crown
Prince but I had the middle
seat in the front row of the
parquet & saw & heard
admirably - It was all a
very pretty picture - the
rows of glad happy young
faces around the house -
very few grown people -
the boxes were filled mostly
by diplomats and their
friends - the parquet by
well dressed curious
strangers mostly - The
Crown Prince & Princess
& Prince Arthur were [Blank page]
