Title

Chicago Drainage Canal Constructed

What occurred

Officially known as the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, the manmade waterway was constructed to redirect the massive amounts of sewage being pumped into the lake. Prior to construction, fears of a Cholera outbreak were present around the city as Chicago's drinking water was still coming from the lake. In response, the canal was built leading all of the sewage from the city into the Des Plaines River, west of the city.
