Black Space: Reading (and writing) ourselves into the future
A celebration of the African Disaporic imagination in Afrofuturism.

February 2 - June 12, 2017
Lally Reading Room, Schaffer Library
About the exhibit:

Black Space: Reading (and Writing) Ourselves in the Future is a time-travel experience looking back at the origins of Afrofuturism and visiting the pioneers of black speculative literature. This trip will stop to question mainstream representations of race in speculative literature and film. We will explore a color musical universe whose denizens include an ArchAndroid and a funky intergalactic doctor, before returning to Earth where we will engage with a speculative arts movement dedicated to the very real issues of social justice and combating racism. A multimedia display will provide a visual and aural experience, offering visitors the chance to discover newer voices in the infinitely-expanding Afrofuturist universe.

This exhibit would not have been possible without the generous support of the Mellon: Our Shared Humanities Grant.
