Student Commentary:

Overview: Over the course of his life, Blake created numerous watercolor and tempera illustrations that depict scenes from the Bible. Almost 200 of his designs are related to the Old and New Testaments. This particular facsimile, compiled by Geoffrey Keynes, provides a catalogue of all of Blake’s images that represent or allude to Biblical subjects. Nine are reproduced in full color. Although Blake had a strong background and belief in Christianity, he also had unorthodox views about religion as a form of “government,” feeling that it had become manipulative and negative in its effect on both individuals and Britain as a whole. Nonetheless, Blake still maintained a strong affinity with both Testaments, and Biblical figures play key roles in his personal philosophy and illuminated works. – Caitlin Williams ‘18
